Basic printer Troubleshooting

Try these basic printer troubleshooting for local and shared printers.


Determine the Printer is locally Connected or Shared In Network

 

 If it is Locally Connected,

  > Make sure the printer is ON.
  > The Printer is properly connected to your System using USB or Parallel Cable.
  > Check whether there are no Print jobs pending (if any print job is pending delete the Print Jobs in Queue.
  > Check the paper preference (ex: A4 size)
  > Test with some basic things like changing of cable, printer ON/OFF, reconnect etc.
  > Run services.msc and search for print splooler, restart the service and then try to print test page.
  > If problem still occurs, Run services.msc and search for print spooler, stop this service. after that open C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS delete all the garbage found in printer folder. now start the print spooler service again and check with test print.
  >  Try to Print Printer Self-test page.
  >  If the self-test page worked, Check cable connections at the printer and computer.
  >  If the self-test page does not print or parts are only printed, check for the
following: Paper jams, Open printer covers, Low ink or toner.

If The Printer Connected is Shared,
 
  > If printer is shared. Other User whether facing the same issue.
  > The System on which Printer is Connected must be ON and connected to Network. and confirm that you are able to print locally from the same system. if not then troubleshoot printer problem in local system only, if printer is OK with local system then troubleshoot the printer problem in other user's PC (shared PC)
   > Ping the IP address of the system. check the printer port settings that must show the IP address or host name of the local system.
 >  access the IP address of local system and try to connect the printer again with the same driver that already installed.
> check the print spool settings that i have described earlier.
> Check the computer browser service in services.msc in local PC, is started or not, if not started click on start.

If the printer not getting set as default:

    Try these steps:
   > Click start and type regedit, click enter.
   > move the location mentioned below
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
   > in right column you will find the key Device, change the value name as your printer name and change the value data as for example:WEP LQ 4400,winspool,Ne03:
   > you can give permission for everyone also: move the location mentioned below
 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
Right click on windows key and click permission, provide Everyone with full control.
   > Restart the system.
